Radical Servants

What does it truly mean to serve? In John 13, we find one of the most striking moments in all of Scripture: Jesus, fully aware of his identity, his origin, and his destination, rises from the table and does something utterly unthinkable. He wraps a towel around his waist, fills a basin with water, and washes the feet of his disciples. In that culture, foot washing was reserved for the lowest servant in the household. No one of standing would ever stoop to that task. And yet the one through whom all things were made kneels before tired, dusty, calloused feet and washes them clean. The pattern John lays out for us is deliberate and deeply personal: Jesus knew who he was, and because of that, he served. This is the invitation extended to us as well. When we understand our identity as children of God, when we hold an eternal perspective on this life, serving others stops feeling like a burden and starts feeling like a natural overflow of who we are. The message is clear and compelling: we are called to do as Jesus did, and the promise attached to that calling is that we will be blessed.
